American cartoonist Alison Bechdel is best known for her long-running comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For and her graphic memoir Fun Home (pictured above), which chronicles Bechdel’s upbringing in rural Pennsylvania and delves into her complex relationship with her father, “touching on themes of sexual orientation, gender roles, suicide, dysfunctional family life, and the role of literature in understanding oneself and one’s family.” In this video, Bechdel talks about her arduous artistic process, which includes photographing herself posing as each of the characters in her works.
